From fleece to wool
The first step to create the highest quality of wool is the selection of the alpaca. Only immaculate animals without any diseases or parasites and which have a fleece of at least nine cm of thickness are suitable for creating high quality fleeces. The next step is to shear the alpaca to harvest the fleece.
Afterwards the fibres are thoroughly cleaned and washed in clean spring water. The fine areas inside where the highest quality of fibres can be found are rolled to the inside to avoid any contamination.
Once clean the fleeces are dried in the sun. Once completely dried they are weight, registered and their quality is assessed and they are categorized by age, alpaca variety and colour. Then they are either processed further directly in the area or transported in yute sacks to nearby locations.
Regardless the final steps are sorting the fibres by quality, spinning, possibly dying, and weaving the wool to create the finished alpaca wool products. Spinning and weaving the extremely soft alpaca hair still is a manual and very delicate process, based on the skills and the knowledge of indigenous Andean communities.
